Training and Education

Neuropsychologists obtain their training in clinical psychology, and then complete additional, specialized training in neuropsychology. All Neuropsychologists are Clinical Psychologists; however, not all Clinical Psychologists are Neuropsychologists.

Dr. Benfield obtained her doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Ph.D) from the University of Detroit-Mercy in Detroit, Michigan. She has worked with people of every age, including young children and older adults, as part of her pre-doctoral training. As part of her training, she completed her APA-accredited Internship at the Chalmers P. Wylie (Columbus, OH) Veterans Affairs hospital, where she gained experience in both neuropsychology and in work at a primary care clinic (Primary Care Mental Health Integration, PCMHI).

For her specialist training, she completed a two-year APA- and AACN-accredited postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology and Rehabilitation Psychology at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM) in Detroit, Michigan. At RIM, she worked in an inpatient rehabilitation hospital with patients who were acutely recovering from brain injury (concussion; moderate to severe), stroke, spinal cord injuries, or other neurological/medical conditions. She also worked in an outpatient setting providing psychotherapy and conducting neuropsychological evaluations for a variety of conditions.

She is currently working to complete board certification in clinical neuropsychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP-CN). She has also served as a peer reviewer for several academic publications.
