Already Booked? What to Expect for your Visit

Our assessments are individually tailored to each client; we do not take a one-size-fits-all approach to testing. However, knowing a bit about what to expect from your day of testing can help reduce the anxiety that many feel when we think about taking a “test.” You can generally expect the following on the day of your exam:

  • You will meet our doctor and get the chance to explain your concerns and problems. She will ask you questions related to your concerns to help her better understand what things could be impacting your thinking or attention. Time: About 1 hour
  • You will complete some surveys/questionnaires to help our doctor understand different aspects of behavioral, emotional, and psychological health and wellbeing. If you bring family, they may also complete some forms and questionnaires. Time: 15 minutes to 2 hours
  • With some clients, you may also undergo cognitive testing. After calling to schedule an appointment, you should understand whether you can expect to do cognitive testing. The length of this testing depends on whether you are completing a shorter or longer evaluation. See our Services page for more details.
  • This testing is NOT like the kind of tests you did in school. There is not usually a pass/fail grade that is assigned to these tests. We are looking to see how you can do on these tests compared to others who are similar to you. Your job is just to try your best. There is no way to “study” for these tests, and we recommend not trying to study as it may make it harder for the doctor to get a clear picture about your thinking skills. Shorter evaluations usually involve about 15-20 minutes of this testing. Longer evaluations can range anywhere from 2-4 hours of this testing, depending on what information the doctor needs about your thinking skills. You may work with the doctor, or you may work with a technician (under direct supervision of a doctor) in completing these tests.
  • All clients also have an opportunity to directly receive feedback from our doctor about your results and the recommendations. This is a very important part of the evaluation, as it allows our doctor to explain your cognitive strengths and weaknesses and the diagnosis at the root of your concerns. You have an opportunity to ask any questions about the testing or results. Time: 1-2 hours
